VCAT response to COVID-19

March 18, 2020

Practitioners,

VCAT yesterday circulated the attached text in an email to parties to proceedings, although I am aware that not all practitioners with current proceedings have received a copy:

VCAT is committed to continuing to provide dispute resolution services to the public, especially in critical areas.
However, in the interests of increasing social distancing in accordance with the latest health advice, VCAT has taken the decision to reduce the flow of users arriving at its venues by postponing non-critical matters and increasing the use of telephone hearings.
Tomorrow, Wednesday 18 March 2020, all matters except those in Residential Tenancies and Guardianship (and a small number of other critical matters) will be adjourned to a date to be fixed. The matters in Residential Tenancies and Guardianship will be heard by telephone. We are in the process of contacting all affected parties and will provide advice on our website, at all venues and via our phone lines.
We are working hard to expand the range of matters that can be heard by telephone beyond those in the Residential Tenancies and Guardianship Lists. We are assessing technological capabilities to conduct remote hearings and will provide advice as soon as practicable.
VCAT will not be scheduling any face-to-face hearings at its venues (including its CBD venue and regional locations such as Oakleigh), but VCAT is still conducting its work and VCAT users are encouraged to contact 1300 01 8228 to discuss their matters.
Thank you for continuing to work with us through this challenging time.

I will try to post any further information about VCAT’s response to COVID-19 and any information about the hearing of retail tenancies matters at VCAT as the information comes to hand, particularly in relation to urgent applications.

Practitioners are otherwise referred to VCAT’s website at www.vcat.vic.gov.au
